Sherwood Rowland was born in 1927 in the small central Ohio town of Delaware. He was such a brilliant and precocious student that he graduated a few weeks before his sixteenth birthday. During the summers of his early teens, the high school science teacher entrusted to him during his two-week vacations the operation of the local volunteer weather station, where he collected data on daily maximum and minimum temperatures and level of precipitation.
It was a precious first experience with systematic experimentation and data collection. After graduation from high school in 1943, Rowland enrolled at Ohio Wesleyan University and in June 1945, as he app
