Ismail Haniyeh[e] (Arabic: إسماعيل هنية, romanized:Ismāʿīl Haniyyah,[5][3][6]pronunciationⓘ;[f] 29 January [c] – 31 July ) was a Palestinian politician who served as chairman of the Hamas Political Bureau from May until his assassination in July [8][9] He also served as prime minister of the Palestinian National Authority from March until June and Hamas leader in the Gaza Strip from June until February , where he was succeeded by Yahya Sinwar.
Haniyeh was born in the al-Shati refugee camp in the then Egyptian-controlled Gaza Strip in or ,[c][10][6][11][12] to parents who were expelled or fled from Al-Jura (now part of Ashkelon) during the Palestine war.[5][3][13] He earned a bachelor's degree in Arabic literature from the Islamic University of Gaza in ,[13]
